You can stack up to 20 applications at once to refill the levels, but you shouldn't need to at the start, because the fertilizer levels recharge by themselves over time. The later, specialized types add 25 of a single flavor. The coarse compost puts 5 points in each type of fertilizer. Each type of seed takes a different amount to fully grow. * Fertilizer: There are 3 types of fertilizer, green, ash, and organic. Each type of seed takes a different amount of water to fully grow. It takes 10 small or 4 large per planter to fill it from empty. The barrels fill 200 Water, and the large barrels fill 500. Bring them to your planters, put the full barrels in your hotbar and select them to empty them one at a time. Put the empty barrel in your hotbar, then select it to fill a barrel. To fill it up, build barrels (easy to make) or large barrels (not difficult, but take a lot of hardwood), and bring them to a stream or lake. I have not noticed it recharging when it rains, either. Water stays in the planters until used by the crops. Don't bother hoeing unless you're ready to plant. The Porosity slowly runs down all the time, whether the cops are planted or not. Going higher just gives you farming xp for every swing, but unless you have nothing else better to do it's a waste of time. For the low quality crops, you only need to get it to 30%. You will need a minimum Porosity before you can plant a seed, but from what I have seen, you don't need it to be higher than the listed value. This is why people use hoes or run aerators on a lawn. * Soil Porosity: How broken up the ground is. Step 3: What to plant? What do all these numbers mean? After your first harvest, you will probably need a stone hoe, and depending on what you plant, you may need water barrels during the growing cycle as well. * If you follow this guide, you should not need any coarse compost. You won't need a hoe yet if you delay placing until you're ready to plant. * The first time you place the planters, they start full with all stats. Fully grown crops can be gathered by anyone, whether they are in your guild or not. * I recommend placing the planters behind a wall. It burns really fast and gives as much as branches. I found it was easiest to gather a stack of grass and light it in a fireplace. At this point in the game, the hardest thing to get is likely the wood ash. * as soon as you acquire the tech for the planter, you can build them in your hand. 20 will be needed to fully utilize all of your personal crude planters, but you can get started with as little as 1, and can utilize public farmlands for way more than that, if you have them available. They don't weigh much, so hold onto them. * Seeds drop from grass when gathered by hand or with a stone sycle.
Shortly after you start the game and begin gathering grass, you will notice that you start occasionally picking up low quality seeds instead of grass.
